Quality of Life
Quality of life (QOL) refers to a pet's overall well-being, and is used when discussing your pet’s physical, mental, and behavioral health as related to the end of life. We are aware owners’ quality of life can change as pets age too. Many, regarding animals, focus on quality of the life verses quantity (years of life). We look at day to day activities of our pets to assess happiness and affects of aging on the human-animal bond.
With senior pets, chronic conditions, or terminal illnesses, ups and downs are common. Our Neighborhood Vet team can help assess your pet’s quality of life or provide consultation to you and your family.
Some conditions that can effect QOL are: organ failure, chronic pain, blindness, paralysis, arthritis, and cancer.
The HHHHHMM quality of life scale developed by veterinarian Alice Villalobos can help guide us when thinking about end of life concerns and changes.
HHHHHMM=Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, & More good days than bad.
